Professional Experience
I am the Managing Director of a portfolio of over 20 companies many of which, over the years, have been successfully turned around from insolvency, receivership and near collapse to sustained profitability and growth. During this time I have built, and continue to maintain, a workforce of 9,000. The primary sectors of the economy in which I have a substantial interest include manufacturing, distribution, real estate and insurance.
Manufacturing Division
The Manufacturing arm comprises of edible foods, packaging, plastics as well as steel.
• The edible foods divisions' primary businesses are wheat, maize milling, edible palm and corn oils, and biscuit manufacturing.
• The packaging material divisions comprise of polypropylene bags, sisal bags as well as HDPE bags.
• The plastic divisions comprise of PVC pipes and fittings, as well as PPR extruded products primarily used in water projects as well as electrical applications.
• The steel division comprise of regionally located steel mills that primarily manufacture re-enforcement steel bars as well as sections, mainly produced for the vibrant constriction industry in the East African Community.
Distribution Division
• The Distribution arm of the business comprises an expanding transportation fleet of over 300 trucks servicing the various manufacturing companies and depot network across the country and within the East African region.
Real Estate and Insurance
• As part of our diversification strategy, there have been significant investments in real estate and real estate development within Kenya.
• Through the insurance business we provide an extensive product range servicing both personal and commercial risk needs through a network of branches around the country.
Due to the diverse nature of my business portfolio and substantial expertise within industry I am often called upon by various Government and Non-Governmental Organizations to advise, discuss and consult on matters affecting business leaders, industries and investors.
Social Responsibility
I was President of the Rotary Club of Nairobi in 2006/2007. A life changing and most humbling experience a considerable part of the year was spent on social projects focusing on the growth and development of impoverished areas within the Kenyan community. Some of these projects included:
Eye Camps
The Eye Camps in Kisii provided thousands of people with free treatment including cataract operations.
Eye Bank
The Rotary Club of Nairobi together with The Nairobi Hospital committed to establishing the first ever Eye Bank in East Africa.
Kilimambogo
2006/2007 saw our first visit to the Mission Hospital in Kilimambogo. The Club arranges for voluntary dentists from across the globe to provide free dental services to those who cannot afford it.
Mathare and Huruma Rotary Community Corps
There was greater focus on the Mathare project and 2006/2007 also saw the launch of the Huruma Rotary Community Corps.
Kaptagat Water & Sanitation Project
This project was initiated during the year and its aim is to provide water fetching points together with toilets and bathroom facilities to those living in a significantly deprived area. It is now a successfully self-managed project where residents charge a small fee to cover maintenance costs.
Cura Rotary Community Corps
The CRCC is a model project and during 2006/2007 it was fortunate to receive several computers donated by the US together with financial support from the Rotary Club of Indianapolis.
2007 World Understanding Day
This was undoubtedly the most successful and profile raising event organized by the Club and one of the biggest events witnessed in the history of Rotary in Kenya. The event was held to commemorate the founding of Rotary and was attended by both HE President Mwai Kibaki and former President Daniel Arap Moi. Also present were most cabinet ministers, senior government officials, over 100 diplomats, various heads of the UN agencies and international organizations, business leaders and Rotarians.
In recognition of the event the Rotary Club of Nairobi won the 2007 Public Relations International Award.
Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW)
This is a recurring project where the Club partners with the Canadian charity SCAW to distribute bed-kits to children in primary schools and homes. In 2006/2007 the project received tremendous support from the Club as more members were encouraged to participate.
Enterprise Awards
This scheme encourages and recognizes innovation in small scale enterprises. In 2006/2007 three finalists were presented with their awards at a colorful ceremony that received plenty of publicity.
Wheelchairs
The Wheelchair Foundation Club together with other Rotary Clubs and support from the Marie Rehema Foundation pledged to purchase several wheelchairs to be donated to those individuals in need.
Spina Bifida Project - Kijabe Mission Hospital
In partnership with the Rotary Club of Cataraqui-Kingston in District 7040 Canada the Club received $70,000 from The Rotary Foundation to meet the costs of operating on children suffering from Spina Bifida.
Water & Sanitation Project in City Primary Schools
The Club installed water tanks and constructed sanitation blocks and toilets for disabled children at various city schools including Jogoo Road Primary School, Githurai Primary School and Mbagathi Road Primary School. Mbagathi also benefited from a kitchen installed by Club members to provide hot meals for the children.
Pure Water Project & Developing a Good Working Partnership with the Rotary Club of Hammond (US)
Focusing on a drive to provide safer drinking water the Club, assisted by the Rotary Cub of Hammond, procured and distributed water purifying sachets to various communities across the country.
Movie Premieres
Our first ever movie premieres fund raising events held during the year were attended by members and their friends and families and were a resounding success! Over KShs 500,000/- was raised for charitable causes.
